The final day of the Wisconsin State Fair includes the finals for the Mr. & Ms. Physique Competition. I knew about this last year, but got to the venue late, and by then the place was completely packed. This year, with the new 70-200 lens, I wanted to be sure to get there early to get a good vantage for the show.

The final day of the State Fair included the finals for the 2014 Mr. & Ms. Physique Competition. I knew about this last year, but got to the venue late, and by then the place was completely packed. This year, with the new 70-200 lens, I wanted to be sure to get there early to get a good vantage for the show.

I was up at 4am that day because I was contracted to shoot the IronGirl Triathlon in Pleasant Prairie that morning. I wrapped that up at 11 am and took an hour nap when I got home. I think I got to the Fair by around 3pm. Parking was ridiculous, and I generally refuse to pay for parking for the Fair. Unless you have kids there’s really no reason to. It’s not like you’ll be any less exhausted from walking all day anyway.

Fortunately a friendly fair-goer saved me a $90 fine as I had almost parked in the same spot he did when he got towed. He showed me the sign that was completely obscured by leaves from an overhanging tree branch. I tell you, the city of West Allis has a parking racket like no other. Complete Bullshit. I ended up with a 7-block walk to the Fair.

I had been thinking about this event since I missed it last year. I knew that the show would take place on a West-facing stage, late in the afternoon/early evening, which of course meant that the setting sunlight would cast everything golden.

What I didn’t expect was that they had erected some shade structures over the bleachers, which blocked the lower half of the competitors, so the effect of the light wasn’t quite so dramatic. Still, the spotlights did focus the attention on the athletes.

Because I was already exhausted and starved by that point, I didn’t stay for the end of the event, but I did get some decent shots of the athletes. I think next year I may try to get closer for an upward shot with a wider lens and a flash.
